street art

Outdoor or ‘street’ art is a global phenomenon, and has proved enormously popular and accessible – particularly with young people. Works by English stencil-artist 'Banksy’ are valued at up to $250,000 each and buildings he has decorated are routinely given 'Heritage-listing' to protect the artwork.

Here in Lismore artists working on the ‘Back Alley Gallery’ have been locals primarily, with others coming from further afield: Murwillumbah, Nimbin, Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Brisbane and even one high-profile artist from Germany.

The Lismore ‘Back Alley Gallery’ has transformed the inner cityscape in Eggins Lane and more eye-catching outdoor art is planned. Stages One and Two of the LBPP- supported Back Alley Gallery project have seen local, regional and even international street artists create a huge range of ‘pieces’ on the rear walls of buildings in the laneway complex.

Driven by local artist project manager Nathan Eyres, along with Lismore's City Centre Manager,  the project features no less than 5 major artworks covering entire walls, plus 14 smaller pieces and nearly 50 ‘paste-ups’. The laneway art gallery is enlivened by small stencils and other tiny ‘gems’ that catch the eye.
