Channon Craft Market Inc.

1 January 1970

Sunday August 11 | 10am-2pm

In August the region will celebrate the environmental protection actions that led to the creation of Nightcap National Park. The fortieth-year commemorative celebrations at the Channon Market will be a special day, for the actual Terania protest action commenced after a Sunday meeting at the Channon Market back in 1979. A protest march started from the Market, up the Terania valley to the protest site beside the rainforest.

Along with the commemorative, the market is hosting an environmental activism expo for some regional groups and organisations involved with environmental protection and use of our land, forests, animal and wildlife habitats, our waters and the air we breathe. There will a special gallery with a photographic display of David Kemps photo, a book launch, special presentations, talks, displays and movie screenings as well as the many fabulous stalls and food of the regular market. Southern Cross University is providing its mobile Sunflower Solar Unit to help power the event.

As part of the anniversary year commemorations a special children’s book has been created by retired teacher Trevor Reece and regional artist Jacque Marks and will be available at the special commemorative market day. The book – The First Rainforest Warriors Terania Australia was created to help retain the history of the historic Terania environmental protection actions and the creation of Nightcap National Park with younger generations across the region. The First Rainforest Warriors Terania is orientated to primary school aged children and has delightful illustrations by regional artist Jacque Marks.  The book following its soft release period is planned to be available publicly through the Nimbin and Caldera Environment Centres and the Mullumbimby Museum / Brunswick Valley Historical Society Inc as well as the monthly Channon Market office.

The Channon Craft Market Inc is now in its 43rd year, supporting 100’s of community groups, small business and individuals, the markets are held on the 2nd Sunday of the month. With over 240 retailers providing services, local produce and products. Located at Coronation Park amongst the heart of The Channon Village. 40 years ago, community meetings were held at the market, these gatherings were supported by the organisers of the markets and were instrumental in forming the non-violent direct action that took place, and to this day the market still supports community organisations who want to make a difference. We take our hats off to the folks who saved the forests of the Nightcap.
