Rainforest Walks

Rainforest Walks & Nature Experiences

For those wanting something deeper, with longer tracks, creek crossings and immersive forest environments.

Protesters Falls Walking Track
Location: Terania Creek, Nightcap National Park
Duration: 45 minutes – 1.5 hours return
Grade: Moderate
A beautiful subtropical rainforest walk leading to a cascading waterfall. This track is also part of important conservation history, adding meaning to the experience.
Mount Matheson Loop Walk
Location: Mount Nardi, Nightcap National Park
Duration: Approx. 1.5 hours (3 km loop)
Grade: Moderate difficulty
A varied loop through rainforest and open forest with sweeping views across the Northern Rivers. A rewarding walk without committing to a full day hike.
Tucki Tucki Nature Reserve Walk
Location: Munro Wharf Road, Tucki Tucki (15km from Lismore City)
Duration: 10–15 minutes
Grade: Easy (short steeper sections)
A short walk through important koala habitat. Educational signage shares insight into local wildlife and conservation.
Boggy Creek Walk
Location: Whian Whian State Conservation Area
Duration: 2–3 hours one way (between Rummery Park Campground and Minyon Falls Lookout)
Grade: Easy to Moderate
A scenic rainforest and open forest walk following Boggy Creek. Along the way you’ll find small waterfalls and swimming holes, making it a refreshing option in warmer months.
Big Scrub Loop Walk
Location: Nightcap National Park (near Rocky Creek Dam)
Duration: Approx. 2 hours
Grade: Moderate
A lush rainforest loop through remnant Big Scrub forest. Rich in birdlife and plant diversity, it’s a beautiful example of the region’s subtropical rainforest.

National Park Walks 

These walks can be enjoyed within easy reach of Lismore, Nimbin and surrounding villages.

 

Protesters Falls Walking Track
Location: Terania Creek, Nightcap National Park
Duration: 45 minutes – 1.5 hours return
Grade: Moderate
A beautiful subtropical rainforest walk leading to a cascading waterfall. This track is also part of important conservation history, adding meaning to the experience.
Pholis Gap Walking Track
Location: Mount Nardi, Nightcap National Park
Duration: Approx. 3 hours return
Grade: Moderate
A rewarding track with sweeping views and rich rainforest sections. Best suited to confident walkers.
Minyon Falls Walking Track (Base & Loop Options)
Duration: 2 hours return to base;
up to 6–7 hours for extended loops
Grade: Moderate to Hard
An iconic waterfall walk descending through ancient rainforest to the base of Minyon Falls. Longer loop options suit experienced walkers.
Big Scrub Loop Walk
Location: Nightcap National Park (near Rocky Creek Dam)
Duration: Approx. 2 hours
Grade: Moderate
A lush rainforest loop through remnant Big Scrub Forest. Rich in birdlife and plant diversity, it’s a beautiful example of the region’s subtropical rainforest.
Byan Yangala Loop Walk
Location: Nightcap National Park
Duration: Approx. 4 hours
Grade: Moderate
A newer loop incorporating sections of the Gidjuum Gulganyi Walking Track. A diverse and satisfying day walk allowing time for breaks and exploration.

Neighbouring National Parks 

These national parks are just a little further afield, yet still easily reached from Lismore, Nimbin and the surrounding villages. They make fantastic day trips, pairing scenic drives with rewarding walks through breathtaking wilderness.

 

For those wanting to go further, some tracks can be extended into more challenging or overnight hikes, offering a deeper immersion into ancient rainforest and mountain landscapes.

 

Palm Forest Walk
Location: Border Ranges National Park
Duration: Approx. 1 hour return
Grade: Easy
A gentle rainforest walk beneath towering palms in cool, shaded forest.
Brummies Lookout Walk
Location: Border Ranges National Park
Duration: Approx. 3 hours (8 km)
Grade: Moderate to Difficult
A longer walk to expansive views across the Tweed Valley and surrounding ranges.
Bar Mountain Circuit
Location: Border Ranges National Park
Duration: Approx. 4 hours
Grade: Moderate
A scenic circuit combining rainforest and lookout views.
Pinnacle Walk
Location: Border Ranges National Park
Duration: Approx. 1 hour return
Grade: Easy
A short walk to panoramic caldera views.
Minyon Falls Look Out

Overnight & multi-day walks

For experienced hikers wanting to immerse themselves fully in the landscape.

 

Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk
The Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk is a spectacular multi-day journey through the ancient Gondwana rainforests of Nightcap National Park. Meaning ‘Old People’s Track,’ the walk passes through towering rainforest, waterfalls and scenic lookouts, offering a rare chance to slow down and experience the deep natural and cultural history of the region.

Location:
Nightcap National Park

Duration:
Approximately 3–4 days (around 42 km), usually undertaken as a guided walk.

Grade: Challenging. Suitable for experienced walkers with good fitness.

 

Historic Nightcap Track
The Historic Nightcap Track follows an old route through the rainforest-covered mountains of Nightcap National Park. This peaceful walk winds through dense subtropical rainforest, past creeks and towering trees, offering a rewarding way to experience the rich landscapes and history of the Lismore hinterland.
Location: Nightcap National Park
Duration: Full-day walk, with shorter return sections possible.
Grade: Moderate to challenging.
