Meet the Locals
Lismore is home to one of the largest urban populations of koalas in Australia, and the region is home to one of the largest genetically diverse koala populations in NSW.
If you are looking to meet some of Lismore’s cutest locals, here’s a run down on the best places to find them:
Robinson’s Lookout is accessed via Robinson’s Avenue in Girard’s Hill. A great place for nature walks just a few minutes out of the city, with stunning views of Lismore and a great place to spot koalas.
Tucki Tucki Nature Reserve is a 4 hectare reserve dedicated to preserving the local koala population and its habitat. Located 15km from Lismore along Wyrallah Road, 5.5km south of Wyrallah Village. When walking through the reserve keep your eyes peeled high in the trees for koalas.
Music and protest movements made history in 1979, when a group of passionate, peacekeeping locals saved one of Australia’s most precious and ancient wilderness areas.
Walk in the Footsteps of Heroes
Imagine an early winter morning in 1979, a cool breeze stirs in the rainforest, the deep growl of a bulldozer rumbles and shakes the forest floor. But coming up the road, there is a rising chorus of song, beating drums, guitars and other musical instruments. Protestors march to defend the forest they love.
Visit Terania Creek and Protestors Falls to experience this truly magical area, walk in the footsteps of the heroes that saved it, and enjoy the new sculpture experience dedicated to these heroes.
There are ten sculptures that tell the story of this brave and determined group with photographic images and stories alongside each sculpture.
Take a picnic to enjoy alongside the creek and follow the 1.4 km return walk to the base of Protestors Falls or head back to The Channon Tavern for hearty meal.
Chase Waterfalls
The region boasts many waterfalls, but Minyon Falls is by far the most epic with its 100m drop.
Minyon Falls is great for a quick stop, but if you’d like to spend longer at this majestic location there’s a picnic area with plenty of shady trees and picnic tables.
There are also a couple of bushwalks that leave from the picnic area, including Boggy Creek walk, and Minyon Falls Walking Track which takes you down to the base of the falls.
Wanting more? Join a local guide for a Wild Waterfalls Adventure Tour where you’ll experience the best waterfalls the North Coast has to offer.
