TUESDAY`S TOP TIP - PLATYPUS SPOTTING ๐ง๐๐ท๐ญ
Did you know that Platypus are found in most permanent creeks and freshwater rivers across Lismore?
When to look?
The best time of day is early or late in the day, and after recent rainfall, however they will feed any time of the day or night, so the best time to look is when you`re near the water.
โญ๏ธ Top Tips for spotting a platypus:
- Local advice will save you time, as other people often know just the right spot and are happy to help.
- Being quiet and still is important, as platypus are sensitive to noise and movement.
- Scan the whole pool with your eyes looking for movement on the surface.
- Lines of bubbles rising to the surface indicate a platypus is feeding.
- Surface disturbance is the main tell. Look for rings, or swirling, on the surface, and listen for faint splashes, as they surface or dive.
- Look closely at objects on the surface of the water. Platypus will often sit still while on the surface, so a keen eye is needed to differentiate them from a floating branch. They`ll stay on the surface for a while to get their breath before diving again.
- Binoculars, or a camera with a strong zoom lens can help you get a closer look.
- Take your time. Platypus need time to return to feeding if disturbed. It can pay to wait 10 to 15 minutes.
- You`ll need some patience, but there is often reward for your efforts.
Some easy to find platypus spotting sites in Lismore:
๐The Butterfly Walk in Goonellabah (Tucki Tucki Creek).
๐Rocky Creek, in Rocky Creek Dam, or just below Rocky Creek Dam Wall (not the spillway).
๐Mulgum Creek in Nimbin (alongside the Nimbin Bush Theatre)
A special thanks to Tim from Wilderness Adventures for today`s top tip! If you are looking for a guided experience, the team at Wilderness Adventures are happy to assist. https://www.wildernessadventures.net.au
