Forms of Net has a long history. In ancient Rome, gladiators were armed with nets to entangle their opponents. In Oriental tradition, the gods were provided with nets to catch humans, either to draw them in or to bend them to their will. In Persian tradition, it was the mystic, who armed herself with a net in an attempt to capture God. Nets have been intrinsic to indigenous practices all over the world and are considered sacred because of the patient endurance their making and mending requires, and the embodied time and traditions they represent.

Reid and McLaughlin have created a series of glass and wire nets formed during a firing process. The heated glass melts to a liquid and fuses to the wire as it cools; integrating hundreds of pieces of hand-cut glass into one unified field.

Exhibition is open from January 19, however the official opening is on February 15, to conicide with fellow exhibition openings.

The first exhibition for 2019 at Blue Knob Hall Gallery is ‘Poetica’. We held this exhibition a few years ago and have had many requests to hold it again.

Artists have selected lines from a poem, song or text to create a piece of artwork. There is a long tradition of artists being inspired by poetry or text, spiritual or otherwise, and the work has resulted in a variety of unique visual interpretations.

Blue Knob Ceramic Studio Artists of the Month are Ali Walker and Trish O’Brien. Ali Walker has had an extensive background in the arts and ceramics. Her work has involved an exploration in the use of local clay. ‘Wild Clay’ has become synonymous with her work and she has produced pieces with beautiful patinas and hues. Trish O’Brien is an emerging ceramic student, using the local flora and fungi as an inspiration for her work. These are often functional as well as sculptural, and add another voice to the quality of work coming out of Blue Knob Ceramic Studio.

Hey, Listen Up champions the empowerment of women through storytelling. Feminist activist Gloria Steinem said ‘You cannot empower women without listening to their stories’. It is the sharing of and listening to women’s stories that begins a conversation that creates social and political awareness about women’s issues that enables the possibility, for positive, social transformation.

Hey, Listen Up gives voice to women’s hidden stories, untold by generations of women who have been silenced by servitude, anger, embarrassment and fear of retribution. Clay ‘women’s embroidery’ and pre-loved underwear are combined to represent women telling the stories of their lived experiences. These objects include handmade ceramic flowers, life size women’s undergarments and large-scale sculptures that represent women. The inclusion of women’s craft references both the labour of love, and the low value assigned to traditional women’s art and ‘work’ and, the unpaid hours of domestic servitude of past generations of women.

Official opening: 6pm Fri 15 Feb 2019

In 1979 Terania Creek became the focus of a landmark environmental protest. People formed a human shield to protect an environmental wonder. The protest represented the first time the presence of protesters challenged the government’s authority over forests and stopped a logging operation.

The Terania Creek Protest made headlines all around Australia. David Kemp, a keen amateur photographer, was recently arrived in this area and captivated by the beauty of the Terania forest, but appalled at the possibility of it being lost. He was determined to join the protest with his young family. His photographs, and the others in this exhibition, are among the few surviving images from this historical event and act as a time capsule for remembering it.

This exhibition will include photographs, archival material (such as signs and banners) and music generated to protect the rainforest at Terania Creek.
